Presenter: Mr. Joe Warren of Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

It has been 24 years since the end of Apartheid. While the peaceful transition to democracy has been rightfully heralded as a momentous achievement, and while there have been many improvements in the lives of millions of South Africans, there are still major challenges facing the country. One of the most pertinent challenges is around reconfiguring the educational system to undo the injustices of an apartheid past, to meet global and national imperatives, and to equip learners to succeed in an uncertain future. This session will consider some of the complexities constraining attempts to provide a just and equitable education to all South Africans. It will include the highly topical and hotly contested notion of ‘decolonization of education’ as a key contemporary issue.
